Over the last few years I have been forcing myself to become a morning workout person. If I wait until after work, I come up with a million excuses as to why I shouldn't- I'm too tired, would rather sit on the couch, need to hurry and make dinner, meet a friend for happy hour, etc.- the excuses are never ending. However, if I knock it out in the morning, my day starts on a positive note, I'm motivated to eat healthy, and it wakes me up. After an adjustment period, I actually realized I am now "a morning person" and really look forward to my extra time in the morning.
Changing my routine and adjusting to this new schedule wasn't an easy battle, so today I'm sharing my tips and tricks to get yourself out of bed and moving in the morning!
Go to bed early. This may seem obvious, but is probably the more important and hardest to do. If you want to get up earlier, then you need to go to bed earlier! Start small. Adjust your bedtime/ wake up time by 30 minutes. Adjust to that, and then keep making more adjustments until you are at your ideal wake up time.
Plan ahead. The night before I set out my workout clothes, fill my water bottle up, set out my to-go coffee cup, and pick out my work outfit for the next day. I also try to prep a quick & easy breakfast that I can eat quickly after my workout class. I typically do overnight oats, make a batch of egg muffins, or pre-cut veggies and fruits and freeze them in baggies for a quick smoothie. Anything you can do to make the morning easier!
Move your alarm across the room. It makes a HUGE difference when you actually have to get out of your cozy bed to turn off your alarm instead of just rolling over and hitting snooze. This trick has probably made the biggest difference to me. This will also prevent you from getting easily distracted by your phone when you are trying to go to bed early :)
Plan a workout you look forward to. This one is simple. If you plan a workout the next day that you dread, I guarantee you decide to sleep instead. Find something that you enjoy and that motivates you to get out of bed. For me, that is Jazzercise or taking Moose for a walk. They are both activities that I enjoy and look forward to.
Find something to motivate you. Bribery works. Even with yourself (at least for me it does). Find a reason that will motivate you to get out of bed and knock out your workout. More time to spend with your family at night? More time to cook a yummy dinner? Extra time to watch your favorite Netflix show? Just find a reason to get yourself out of bed! I, for example, am more motivated to get out of bed and go to class if I have cute workout clothes to wear. For example, I will tell myself that if I workout 4 times this week, then I can buy a new workout outfit. Like this top at Target I've been eyeing. Gets my booty out of bed!
